Well done to all the regions and cities that have done so well in the latest Ernst & Young European Attractiveness Survey.
In the last few days these headlines have all been generated from the same survey:
‘London leads the way for foreign investment says survey’
‘Scotland heads European table for inward investment jobs’
‘North west tops for attracting inward investment’
‘Midlands leads FDI poll’
If inward investment teams played football, we'd need 20 Premiership trophies!
Beyond the spin, the survey does reinforce the importance of foreign inward investment to the UK recovery but also shows how the competition is heating up.
The full E&Y report can be found here.
Whilst this is all interesting stuff, it’s only a partial perspective as these results, like the UKTI annual figures, fail to track the huge number of UK-owned companies that are creating thousands of jobs. Any location interested in attracting jobs mustn’t fall into the trap of only searching overseas when far bigger opportunities can be found closer to home.
Breeze Strategy has begun to track the major job-creating projects in the UK and has discovered that 70% are being undertaken by indigenous firms. Watch this space for more details.
